Glock G30s Review - At the media day before the SHOT show last January, I stood at the Glock booth, waiting to see what all the hype was about.

New Glock. New compact .45 ACP Glock pistol. 10 round compact .45 Glock pistol. Despite seeing a lot at the SHOT show, a new Glock made from parts from another existing Glock wasn't on my must-see list.

As I stood in the freezing wind waiting for my chance to photograph this thing, I was not impressed. The gun does not seem small

Or new enough to all the hype. But then a member of the Glock team, sensing that I was less than impressed, came over and extolled the virtues of the 30S. He took one from his coat pocket.

I didn't even notice, I'm pretty good at picking these things up. He was wearing a neat black wool coat with a gun in his pocket. And that's 10 rounds. and .45 ACP. And the Glock. I then shot. I'm here to admit I'm impressed.

What animal is this? It's a job gun. For Glock talkers, the 30S is a Glock 30 SF frame with a Glock 36 slide.

The appearance is Gen 3, but the internal recoil system belongs to the Gen 4 series. The double stack mags are fat, but not impossible to hold. It is short, but has enough room for all the fingers.

The standard Glock sights are fixed sights. Because the gun is intended for concealment, some corners are slightly rounded. The barrel measures 3.78 inches with an overall length of 6.8 inches. It is 4.76 inches tall and 1.28 inches wide. Weight 20 oz.

10 + 1 Magazine will really appeal to most of us. 11 rounds of 0.45 ACP. Not too shabby.

The most impressive part of the 30S is the recoil management. I have been able to get out some .45s that really bite. It's not the hottest round on the market, but it packs a punch. This recoil is more difficult to control in a compact pistol. But if you watch the video above, you will see that Jacob has come a long way with the 30S. The barrel barely moved.

Obviously, this requires you to hold and use the seconds hand efficiently, but it's easy with the 30S. Like most Glock pistols I've played with, the 30S is reliable with ball, hollow point, and +P. We did 300 rounds the first afternoon with no problems.

Trigger pull is somewhere north of 5 lbs. The test pistol that we have pulls quite smooth and the breakout is reliable. With no safety slide-mounted manual to operate the trigger as a safety feature, 5 to 6 lbs pull provides enough insurance against accidental discharge and enough light to allow precision defense.

To wrap up my basic assessment of the 30S, I'll give you this. I'm not a Glock guy. I don't own a Glock, never have. But I can, soon. I really like the way the 30S runs. If I can say this without sounding reductive, it functions like a Glock. It's small enough to conceal, delivers 11 rounds of .45 ACP fire, and is as easy to control as many full size .45s. MSRP for the 30S is $637. Not bad at all.

We took the Glock 19 to the range this week and it got a little noisy. Visually, they are very similar. We had both sit on the bench between video shoots, and I had to read the numbers on the slides to tell them both.

The 30S and 19 are very close in size and fit in the same holster. I haven't found a holster for the 30S yet, but it fits the BlackHawk SERPA CQC perfectly.

This should work with any adjustable (I mean tension) or leather (stretching with just a light touch) holster. The 30S is a fraction of an inch (0.10") wider than the 19, so you may need the extra room. Kydex may present a greater challenge.

I think the problem is an arithmetic problem. Would you rather have 16 rounds of 9mm or 11 rounds of .45 ACP. When we talk about the difference of only five rounds, I use .45 every day. But this is me.

I think the 30S will appeal to many who are looking for a compact .45 caliber, but want more than the limited capacity of a single-stack rifle like the Springfield Armory XD (it is slightly thinner than the 30S, but four rounds are shorter) ).

According to a Glock spokesperson, the 30S was originally built for plainclothes LAPD officers who wanted a compact .45 ACP with enough capacity to serve as a backup gun. It's definitely up to the task. But it is more than that and it will apply to many people.

The 30S would be a great primary handgun for LEOs and legitimate civilians to carry with incredible capacity in their country. The new .45ACP Glock 30S was born from a slightly modified Glock shooter and "hacker" married to a 30SF frame and 36 slides. This hacker feels that the 30SF is too big to conceal, while the 36 has a 6+1 capacity and doesn't have enough ammo.

The Glock 30S officially solves this problem, with a slimmer sleeve for concealed carry comfort and an increased 10+1 capacity. I fired the 30S for the first time at the SHOT Show last month, and in the limited time I have, I have noticed a reduction in (perceived) recoil (Note: Considered recoil is a subjective measure of this recoil. small Author, compared to the same pistol.) I asked Glock is a test gun so I have more trigger time to evaluate it.

The 10-round double-column magazine has a pinky extension that allows the 30S to fit the author's average-sized hand.

Looking at the blowback, and by doing further research comparing the 30S to other subcompact .45ACP Glock models, I noticed that the Glock 30S has a "barrel height" (sometimes called "bore axis" - Glock measures the Barrel Height from the center to the front most bore. in a pistol sling) is only 0.79" compared to 1.26" for the 30, 30SF and 36.

The lower barrel height of the 30S can be one explanation for the reduced (re-perceived) recoil. To learn more, I asked Andrew Tuohy on the Vuurwapen blog, and he noted:

The bore axis can affect how the pistol behaves in the shooter's hand. Ideally, the recoil axis should be parallel to the shooter's arm. However, this is only a small part of the equation. Projectile mass and velocity, as well as arm mass and velocity, arm arm distance, and recoil spring weight/strength all have a greater physical impact. That being said, if the shooter thinks the gun is designed in a way that reduces recoil, he may think it's easier to shoot than it will be used.

Using 230gr .45ACP Remington UMC ammo, I took out my Glock 30S and tried it out. I did the following tests with size 5 and size 15:

Speed (time): With low readiness, 3-shot groups set the pac timer to a random start tone with a 1.5 second follow-up beep - 3 shots completed in a 1.5 second time frame.

Glock 30s Gen 3

For accuracy testing, I can make 0.75 "and 1.25" groups of 5 and 15 meters respectively. For the speed test, I made a set of 4.75" and 5.75" at 5 and 15 meters.

For me, this gun is accurate and fast out of the box. If I want to use the 30S for covert carry, my personal choice would be to change out the sight for a night vision goggle (like Trijicon 3 dot tritium) or another low light sighting system, put on a lighter recoil spring, and put on a crisper A trigger such as the Fulcrum trigger from The Glock Store reduced the trigger pull from the stock 5.5 lbs to around 4 lbs, the weight of carrying a general concealment.

All in all, I really like the Glock 30S and it will be interesting to see when it is finished.
