In the days and weeks following President Kennedy's death, the White House received many letters of condolence—more than 800,000 letters in the first six weeks, eventually rising to 1.5 million.
Condolences poured in from all over the world. Men, women and children from all walks of life - social, economic, political, ethnic, racial and religious - wrote to Jacqueline Kennedy and her children. They expressed their shock and disbelief, offered words of support and encouragement, shared their memories of President Kennedy and shared what he meant to them. They also sought to assure the Kennedy family that John F. Kennedy and his legacy would be remembered.
Many letter writers admitted that they were just one of the "little people" and that they did not expect the First Lady to actually receive their letters, but nevertheless they felt compelled to share their thoughts. Despite the large number of letters, Jacqueline Kennedy's secretaries made sure that almost every letter of condolence received a response expressing gratitude to Mrs. Kennedy.
