The 9mm and .38 Special proved ineffective at deterring robbers, while the .357 Magnum was a revolver cartridge that limited the user's load capacity to six rounds at a time. Law enforcement wanted a powerful round that could be transported in large quantities.
The .357 Sig was the result of an effort by Sig Sauer and Federal Ammunition to duplicate the .357 Magnum round in a pistol cartridge. Federal's .357 Magnum 125 jacketed hollow point tip produces 575 feet at the muzzle, at a velocity of 1440 feet per second – well above the speed of sound. On the other hand, Federal's new .357 Sig 125 casing hollow point generates 506 foot-pounds at 1350 feet per second. The higher velocity of the .357 Sig not only provides more energy to the target, but also a flatter shooting trajectory than the nine millimeters and .38 Special.
The Glock 31 is Glock's entry into the .357 Sig market, admittedly a niche market, but one with a devoted following. The G31 is similar to the Glock 17 in that the original Glock is chambered in nine millimeters, as the difference between .357 inches and nine millimeters is only a matter of .06 millimeters. The Glock 31 is 8.03 inches long, 5.47 inches tall, with a slide width of 1.0 inches and an overall width of 1.26 inches. Both Glocks have a barrel length of 4.49 inches. The Glock 31 is just over an ounce heavier than the empty Glock 17.
The Glock 31 is a striker-fired pistol just like other Glocks. Unlike conventional semi-automatic pistols, the striker mechanism does not have a hammer, allowing a smoother pull from under clothing and a more consistent trigger pull. The new pistol also features Glock's safe action system. The system, standard on all Glock pistols, uses three built-in safety mechanisms: a built-in trigger safety that requires finger pressure on the trigger, a firing pin safety that prevents unintentional movement of the firing pin, and a drop Security .
