By late spring 2023, Rock Island Arsenal will be home to the world's largest metal 3D printer.
The Jointless Hull Large Format Tool enables the printing of large parts for military ground vehicles. It is expected to be fully operational in the spring of 2023 and has a capacity of 30 feet long, 20 feet wide and 12 feet high.
Maj. Gen. Darren Werner said that this gives them the opportunity to increase production to a level that goes forward with modern technology that provides safe equipment.

"It gives us the ability to build things we haven't been able to build before," Werner said. "We're entering a space where we can build something in the world that helps with three computers and bring it to maturity as a real product on the ground."
The printer can produce large metal parts, including fabrics and other military vehicle components, in a single part, rather than assembling many individual parts. It is also faster and more efficient than traditional manufacturing, as it produces less waste.
U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Moline, said the 3D printer is the future of everything and that this printer will help prevent weak spots in welds or joints and create the next generation of military vehicles.
The printer will be tested in Rockford in early December before being disassembled and brought to the Arsenal. It will be assembled and unveiled at the Arsenal in April and the plan will be fully operational in May.

Maj. Gen. Christopher O. Mohan will assume command of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command in a ceremony June 15 at the Rock Island Arsenal.

The ASC is headquartered at the Rock Island Arsenal, and the head of the ASC is designated as the head of the RIA.
Mohan replaced Maj. Gen. Daniel G. Mitchell, who retired from the military last month. Matthew Sannito, a civilian member of the Senior Active Service, served as ASC's Interim Executive Director.
Mohan comes to ASC from Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he served as commander of the 21st Theater Support Command.
A native of Carthage, North Carolina, Mohan became principal in 1989 after graduating from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. His service includes overseas deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as duty at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Hood, Texas; Tooele Army Base, Utah; at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Mohan also serves in the Department of the Army Headquarters and ASC Headquarters of the US Army Materiel Command.
